About CBD

What is CBD?

To know exactly what CBD is, you must know what a cannabinoid is. A cannabinoid is a class of chemical compounds that acts on cannabinoid receptors in cells that alter neurotransmitter releases in the brain which send messages between cells. These receptors (which are found in the brain, lungs, liver, and kidney) are part of the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. CBD is a special type of cannabinoid because it acts as a ligand to many non-cannabinoid receptors which bind together to release neurotransmitters in your brain. What’s the difference between CBD and THC?

Both CBD and THC can be found in the cannabis plant. They both have the same molecular structure but are slightly different in the way the atoms are arranged, giving the two differing effects on the body. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound which means it doesn’t produce the high that’s associated with THC. Where THC binds to CB1 receptors, CBD binds weakly or not at all to CB1 and can inhibit the binding of THC if taken together.

Consuming CBD will normally not show up on drug tests due to its trace amount of THC, however, there are CBD-sensitive tests available. Even when there’s a small amount of THC in CBD oil there’s little reason to be worried about testing positive for THC because you would have to consume a lot of the oil for it to be detectable. It is possible, though highly unlikely, that that extremely high usage of CBD oil can produce a false positive on a drug test. Even then, a follow-up test can provide more conclusive results.

Difference between Hemp Seed oil and CBD?

Making a distinction between the two can be confusing, in short, hemp seed oil is made by extracting oil from the seed of a hemp plant whereas CBD is extracted from the bud, or flower, of a hemp plant. CBD is part of a group of chemicals known as cannabinoids found in cannabis (hemp). CBD oil consists of a carrier oil where as hemp seed oil is purely the oil that is pressed out of the seed. The biggest distinction between the two is that hemp seed oil does not contain any cannabinoids. Hemp seed oil is used for nutritional value and sometimes skin care. Be sure to read labels carefully when purchasing CBD oil as some companies label hemp seed oil as cannabis sativa oil which can be deceiving. To summarize, hemp seed oil is great for cooking and moisturizing skin, not so much for providing pain relief.
